8 Myths about Psychological Safety

🗞 But first, MEMOIR NEWS hot off the press

My upcoming memoir, You Are Meant for Great Things, is being published in 2022. The manuscript is done.  Phew. The book cover design is in the final stages, and you'll receive a sneak peek soon.

After being diagnosed with Stage III ovarian cancer in my 20’s, the experience became a powerful catalyst that continues to shape my life decisions both personally and professionally. In this book, I share some very personal stories and reveal mistakes made, risks taken, failures suffered - and most importantly - lessons learned.

My hope is that my story can help you reframe major life setbacks into stepping stones as difficult obstacles cross your path.

🌎 In other news related to lessons learned, I am writing a second book on Culture Leadership for companies on a mission to build community, health, and wellness in the world.

I believe that people matter most, and culture is a culmination of how an organization treats its people, and how people treat each other.

For this leadership book, my goal is to interview 30 experts in the field from CEOs to Chief People Officers, and I am halfway there. In tandem, I am studying widespread, validated research on what it takes to build a Best Place to Work

The purpose of this business book is to integrate powerful data with stories of culture leaders succeeding at the highest levels. Readers will gain insights and a clear, realistic roadmap to accelerate goals around organizational health and effectiveness.

One new tool I am learning is the Fearless Organization Scan, a validated assessment, to measure the level of Psychological Safety within a team.

Why is this important? Because there are mountains of evidence and decades of research behind key findings.

“Psychological safety is the #1 predictor of inclusion and high performance.” -- Google Aristotle research studying 180 teams over a 2-year period

Some leaders may think Psychological Safety is soft, and too mushy for business.

The opposite is true.

· The truth is Psychological Safety is a condition necessary for HIGH PERFORMANCE. 🏆

· Psychological Safety is NOT these 8 things: 🚫

In my research, one quote stands out most. The Chief People Officer of a multi-billion 💰 (with a B) company said verbatim:

“Psychological Safety is EVERYTHING. Without it, performance is derailed.”

Mic drop. 🎤

Courageous culture leaders are always learning, improving, and want to dig into the data to build exceptional teams and cultures.
